 Frequently Asked Questions

  • Sclerotherapy is the gold standard for the treatment of spider veins. It involves multiple injections of an irritant solution directly into the vein(s). The irritant causes the vein(s) to collapse, which then become absorbed by the body within 6-12 weeks.

  • Treatment involves multiple injections using a very fine needle and usually takes around 20 minutes. Immediately afterward, compression stockings will be applied and should be worn for 5-7 days. You can resume most normal activity that same day.

Common side effects include itching, redness, raised areas at the injection sites, and bruising. Over the next several weeks the veins might look worse before they begin to absorb.

  • The number of treatments will vary depending on your goals, how extensive your spider veins are, and how you respond to treatment. Most people need multiple treatments (2-4) for best results.

  • You can resume all normal activity immediately following treatment.

However, we do ask you refrain from strenuous exercise for 48 hours, avoid soaking in the bath or hot tubs, and limit direct sun exposure until the veins have absorbed.

Compression stockings (20-30 mm Hg) are also recommended for 5-7 days after treatment.

  • Contraindications to sclerotherapy include pregnancy, breastfeeding, history of acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT), blood clotting disorders, and a known allergy to Polidocanol.

Other reasons you might not be a candidate for treatment include risk factors and/or symptoms that suggest underlying venous disease. This will be discussed prior to starting any treatment.

  • Consultations give you an opportunity to ask questions, discuss your goals for treatment and have your problem areas assessed. Expectations, timelines and aftercare instructions will also be discussed. Together, we’ll come up with a treatment plan to fit your goals.

The other important part of the consultation is to determine if you’re an appropriate candidate for treatment. This is done by ruling out contraindications to treatment and evaluating your risk factors.

    As always, consultations are complimentary.

  • Compression stockings (20-30 mm Hg) are recommended for 5-7 days after treatment to promote optimal results and to minimize potential side effects. Stockings should be purchased prior to your first treatment and must cover the areas you would like treated. For example, if you have an area on your thigh you’d like treated, you will need thigh-high compression stockings.
